Thanks for the article, Jay. I agree with you that time spent with one's children is better spent than time at work, even at the expense of many luxuries. I also agree that the perceived "security" of a full-time salaried position is largely an illusion: it is safer to have a variety of income streams, if possible. Thanks again for the article.

I think that, for some people, working full-time is Plan A.

It is narrow-minded to think that everybody wants to run their own business or be an artist. Some people just need a salary so that they can live life - life is about life, not income.

I like the point made above: "one has to make maximum effort to gain the maximum and not letting your family suffer –that ought to be the key so job or no job".

What matters is not whether you prefer employment or entrepreneurship. The most important thing is that you choose a path where you can raise enough income to support your family.

Unfortunately, given the lack of job security these days, you cannot rely on a single job to support your family into the future.

Andrew's appreciation for the post has inspired me almost more than the article itself. (Which was fabulous, thank you, Jay.) I'm mentally referring to a comment Michael Phelps made, "The biggest reason I can do what I do is because I actually, truly, believed I could do it." Try getting in *that* into head space. Delicious!

Jay, I've read all of your articles, and this one is easily one of my favorites. I've been waiting for another one for quite a while now. I am currently 15 years old, and my plan A is to be a musician, tour the world, and influence my genre of music long after I'm dead. I have been talking to my therapist a lot about things very similar to this, and I agree with him completely when he says "We all have a gift. If we don't follow our gift, it can make us sick and crazy." We all need to follow our dreams, regardless of the world around us. As long as I'm pursuing music, I don't care how poor I am.

To Peter, that is the worst logic I have ever heard. Follow your dreams! Whats the worst that can happen? Happiness?

-Andrew

P.S. I am greatly looking forward to your next article Jay.
