I love the article. I have just recently begun to look at my life and see why everything is going wrong. I have found that I have been "too nice" in many cases. Is respect harder to get depending on the color of your skin? Because im asian and it seems the only way i can approach someone is to be well nice to them. Otherwise i just get the normal 'oh great an asian... why is he even talking to me' feeling and when i pursue ive found out they will never contact me or remember my existence. Also does respect help in the relationship department over kindness? It would be fantastic if i get a response from you, but im not gonna be hoping on it too much. Take care ! :)

Good grief, this brings up so many insecurities in me - I am quite the yes-woman, due to the fear of alienation. I was alienated a lot during my childhood, and it greatly affected me. I wondered 'What was wrong with me?'. I realized that saying 'Yes' really got me popular with people around me. True to your article, my time and my abilities were exploited.

But I often wonder - is this just society's effect that you MUST be popular with others? When I read the article first without thinking too deep, it seemed like the person writing it preferred to be the loner than the popular person. The layman would think 'Are you mad? Just say 'Yes' if you can make it, or if you can help him! Don't be selfish!'

This is a topic that i have struggled with for a long time . Treating people with respect was a matter of living up to my own personal code of ethics,. People took advantage of my kindness sometimes sure but i saw it coming, and never gave more than i wanted to, That was not the problem . What i never understood was why even the people who never tried to exploit my kindness didn't seem to value my friendship. Your car analogy was brilliant . i have read many articles on this subject that had no useful advice for me, I already knew how to say no and how to ask for what i wanted or expect from people. Now i know how to get them to understand the value of what i have to offer.and that was the missing piece. Thank you for your set of clear-cut ,practical guidelines. i am quite comfortable saying ans doing all of those things. ,

Great article,

I am running into this right now and this information has given me more focus on what I want out of life. I have implemented many of these tactics to new AND old relationships and everyone seems to think I am losing my marbles but I just want what I want and what's wrong with that? right?

Thanks for sharing

Yes some simple valuable advice - us kind and giving people need this awareness and reassurance. I have lost a couple of friends and several jobs due to being over kind and giving, not to mention my 'true love'. It's a strange phenomenon really? I don't understand others some-times. Take advantage of kindness? Why be so low? I know it all comes back to scientific genetics, the soul behind the person, their low vibration, awareness, addictions, problems etc But, I wish one day life will be as beautiful as it is in my mind. It's almost like I can just see every-one's problems and no-one understands this, I do need to be more diplomatic and not appear rude but it's true. I know what my problems are, I can tell you in two sentences. That's it, be responsible for who you are and get on with life, develop or get therapy, follow your intuition. A friend, an actual friend, once told me, actually even wrote it to me in a card that mentioned how out of this world I was, he wrote: 'Misty don't ever let any-one take advantage of your kind nature' some-thing like that, and I didn't get it at the time really I didn't connect to it but thought it was sweet. Later, much later on, in the real world (after uni) and in the work-force I see now how things have come to light. It's a very cruel world if you get amongst it. Yes, the mean and weak people in this world that do take advantage of kindness and also seem oblivious and irresponsible to how they are acting. Often others support them due to low vibration of relationships. Why I discovered this so late in life at 30 it's interesting. I chose to work with children in the first place so I didn't have to be around boring, uninspired adults full of problems. In reality - I'm still around them and literally need to fight them some-times in advocacy for children. I have really had it with such people and this article really has helped bring some light and perspective into the equation, so that I will not be subject to waste my precious hope, kindness and inspiration, ever, ever again!
I googled "Kindness is not a weakness" and this article came up.
A friend of mine was saying she should be mean rather than nice and i told her no way!

The story about the boy who treats others depending on how they treat them is how I've been living my life. I wanted to say what a good article this is and thank you very very much for writing and posting it.
